How to choose a bowling team name
What makes a good bowling team name
Bowling might be the friendliest sport for team names. Your name goes on the league standings, the screen above your lane and, if you are doing it right, the back of a matching bowling shirt. Most leagues are as much about the snacks, the music and the people as the scores, so a fun name fits right in.
Bowling also has a great vocabulary to play with: strikes, spares, splits, gutters, turkeys, pins and lanes all make easy puns. Mix one of those with a silly animal, a retro vibe or the snack bar, and you have a name that gets a laugh every Thursday night.
- Keep it short. The scoring screens at many bowling centres only show a limited number of characters, so long names get cut off.
- Make it easy to shout. You will hear it announced and cheered across the alley.
- Laugh at your own game. Names about gutters, bumpers and rented shoes are funny without poking at anyone else.
- Think about the shirt. Bowling shirts are a tradition; picture your name stitched on the back.
- Keep it clean. Leagues often include families and kids, so a family-friendly name is always the safe bet.
Mistakes to avoid
- Crude puns. Bowling has a lot of words that people like to twist into innuendo. Skip them; league secretaries and families will thank you.
- Names that mock other teams or groups of people. Friendly rivalry is great; keep the jokes about the game.
- Very long names. If the scoring system shortens it to nonsense, the joke is lost.
- Copying another team in your league. Check the standings sheet first.
- Using a famous brand or band name. It is not yours to use, and it is a problem if you print it on shirts.
Ten-pin, five-pin and everything in between
Whether your league plays ten-pin, Canadian five-pin or candlepin, the same rules apply: short, clean and fun. Five-pin and candlepin leagues can even use their game in the name, like “Five-Pin Fanatics”, which also helps when you play in tournaments against other centres.
For kids’ birthday parties and family nights, go for animals and snacks, such as “Bumper Buddies” or “Pizza & Pins”. For a serious league, names built on bowling terms like tenth frame, pocket and clean game sound confident without being silly.
Names for work and charity bowling nights
Bowling is a favourite for office outings and fundraisers because everyone can play, whatever their skill. For those events, keep names short and inclusive, and lean on the fun side of the alley: rented shoes, bumpers and the snack bar are jokes every guest understands. If prizes are on the line, a quick sign-up sheet with team names makes the organiser’s life much easier.
Pick, vote and get the shirts
Use the generator above to build a list, star your favourites and vote as a team. Check that it fits on the scoring screen and that nobody else in the league has it, then tell the league secretary. Finish it off with matching shirts, because a bowling team without shirts is just a group of people who happen to be bowling.
