How to choose an Etsy shop name
Etsy’s shop name rules
Etsy is stricter about shop names than most places, so start with its rules. At the time of writing, an Etsy shop name must be 4 to 20 characters long, use only letters and numbers (no spaces, punctuation or special characters) and not already be in use by another shop. It also must not break Etsy’s policies, which means no one else’s trademarks and nothing offensive. Rules can change, so check the current shop name guidance in Etsy’s Help Center before you open your shop.
Because spaces are not allowed, most sellers capitalise each word so the name is easy to read, like WoollyWren instead of woollywren. Every name this generator creates already follows these rules: letters only, no spaces and 20 characters or fewer.
What makes a good Etsy shop name
Make it about your style, not just your product. “MossyFernStudio” can sell prints, cards and stickers; “FernStickers” cannot.
Keep it short. Shorter names are easier to remember, type and fit on packaging, labels and business cards.
Make it easy to spell. Buyers who loved an order will search for you again, and a tricky spelling loses them.
Match your vibe. Cottagecore, minimalist, spooky and funny shops all suit very different words; the style filter above helps here.
Think beyond Etsy. If you later open your own website or sell at craft fairs, your shop name becomes your brand.
Mistakes to avoid
Using brand or character names. Shops built on famous brands, sports teams or cartoon characters can be removed for trademark infringement.
Adding random numbers. “CandleShop2024” looks like a fallback when the name you wanted was taken.
Names that are too close to a popular shop. Buyers may confuse you, and the other seller may complain.
Hard-to-read letter runs. Without spaces, some word combinations read wrongly, so check how it looks in lowercase too.
Treating it as temporary. Etsy does let you change your shop name, but there are limits, and repeat customers remember the old one.
Check that the name is free
Etsy. Etsy will tell you during shop setup whether the name is available. Also search Etsy for similar names so you do not end up next to a lookalike shop.
Ontario business registry. If you sell under a name that is not your own legal name, you will generally need to register it. Search the Ontario Business Registry first.
Domain name. Check whether the .com (and .ca in Canada) is free, even if you do not need a website yet.
Social handles. Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest drive a lot of Etsy traffic, so try to get the same handle on each.
Narrow it down
Use the generator above to build a long list, star your favourites and pick three. Type each one in Etsy’s shop setup to see if it is free, picture it on a thank-you card in your packaging, and ask a few friends which shop they would click on. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
Frequently asked questions
What are Etsy’s shop name rules?
+
At the time of writing, Etsy shop names must be 4 to 20 characters, use only letters and numbers with no spaces or special characters, and not already be taken by another shop. They also cannot use other people’s trademarks or break Etsy’s policies. Check Etsy’s Help Center for the latest rules.
Do the names from this generator follow Etsy’s rules?
+
Yes. Every name is made of letters only, with no spaces or symbols, and is 20 characters or fewer. You still need to check that the name is not already taken on Etsy and is not someone else’s trademark.
Can I change my Etsy shop name later?
+
Etsy does let you change your shop name from your shop settings, but there are limits on how often, and repeat buyers may not recognise the new name. It is best to choose a name you are happy to keep.
How do I make an Etsy shop name readable without spaces?
+
Capitalise the first letter of each word, like PaperMoonPress, so buyers can see where the words split. Also read the name in all lowercase to make sure it does not accidentally spell something else.
Do I need to register my Etsy shop name as a business name?
+
In Ontario, if you sell under a name other than your own legal name, you generally need to register that business name with the Ontario Business Registry. Rules differ in other provinces and US states, so check your local registry.
Should my Etsy shop name describe what I sell?
+
A hint helps buyers, such as Knits, Prints or Candle in the name, but a style-based name gives you room to add new products. Many sellers use a brandable name and describe their products in the shop title and listings instead.
